The bright segment is what Gehl R135 GEN:2 is rated to carry; the grey run past it is the rest of its tipping load. Bar length is tipping load drawn to the same scale on every machine on the site, so a short bar is a smaller machine and not a conservative rating.

Second-generation small-frame radial skid loader, and the machine that actually carries the 1,350 lb slot in Gehl's US range - the older R134 only ever appeared on non-US storefronts. A 46 hp Yanmar on a 5,255 lb frame keeps it towable and keeps the emissions hardware simple.

The same machine is sold as the Manitou 1350R NXT:2, which we do not list separately. Different paint and a different dealer network, same hardware.

Suits: Farms, rental fleets and tight-access work that has outgrown a 1,000 lb machine but does not want a mid-frame's weight Its radial lift path reaches furthest at mid-height, for digging, grading and backfilling.

What owners report

Summarised from the sources listed below. Nothing here was tested by us.

Small, light and deliberately simple is the whole proposition. Buyers land here when the binding constraint is the trailer behind the truck rather than the pile in front of the bucket, and at 5,255 lbs it clears that constraint comfortably where the tracked machine of the same rating does not.

Mechanically it is about as uncomplicated as a modern skid steer gets: a 46 hp Yanmar with its torque peak low in the rev range, 17 gpm of auxiliary flow, radial arms, a 110-inch hinge pin and 8 mph of travel. The quiet surprise is that it is faster than its tracked sibling, which runs at 6 mph, so the wheeled machine wins on both weight and site mobility. The limits are equally plain - no high-flow option, no two-speed, and a rating measured at 50 percent of tipping load, which means the 1,350 lbs on the decal is a less conservative number than the identical figure on the tracked RT135.

It earns its place on a farm, a small landscape operation or any job where towing capacity and simplicity outrank raw capability. It is the wrong choice if flow-hungry attachments are anywhere in the plan. Gehl publishes no price, so quote it as both a Gehl and a Manitou 1350R NXT:2. Before signing, check the counterweight is included if you need the 1,499 lb figure, confirm what the nearest dealer stocks, and compare tipping loads rather than rated capacities when shopping it against other brands.

What owners like

  • At 5,255 lbs it is the one machine in this part of the range a three-quarter-ton pickup will move on a standard trailer without argument, and it is 1,255 lbs lighter than the tracked RT135 that carries the same headline rating.
  • Eight mph of travel is faster than the tracked RT135's 6 mph, so despite being the cheaper and lighter machine it actually gets around a property quicker - the usual tracks-versus-wheels trade here runs in the wheeled machine's favour on time.
  • The 46 hp Yanmar 4TNV88C makes its 108 ft-lbs of torque at 1,820 rpm, low enough that the machine pushes into a pile without needing to be wound out.
  • Radial geometry is what this size of machine is bought for - scraping, backdragging and rough grading all happen at or just below grade, and radial arms push hardest exactly there.
  • GEN:2 is the current production model rather than run-out stock, and the same machine is sold as the Manitou 1350R NXT:2, so parts and support come through two live dealer networks instead of one.

What owners complain about

  • Seventeen gpm with no high-flow package of any kind rules out mulchers, cold planers and most hydraulic breakers permanently. What you buy is what it will ever run.
  • The 1,350 lb rating is taken at 50 percent of tipping load - the tipping load itself is 2,700 lbs - so it holds back less reserve than a machine quoting 1,350 lbs on a 35 percent basis. Within Gehl's own range that is confusing, because the tracked RT135 quotes the identical 1,350 lbs at 35 percent on a 3,858 lb tipping load.
  • No two-speed option is listed, so 8 mph is the ceiling on a machine that is otherwise well suited to moving around a property.
  • A 110-inch hinge pin height will not clear the sides of a full-size dump truck, which limits it to trailers and low-sided bodies.
  • The optional counterweight adds only 149 lbs of rating, taking it to 1,499 lbs - the smallest counterweight gain across this part of the range, so it recovers less of what a heavy attachment costs you than the same option does on the bigger machines.
  • Gehl publishes no list price at all for this model, and dealer coverage leans heavily on legacy agricultural dealers, so both the price and the parts response depend entirely on who is nearest to you.

What buyers ask

Is the R135 GEN:2 the same capacity as the tracked RT135?
They share a 1,350 lb headline but not the meaning. Gehl rates its wheeled machines at 50 percent of tipping load and its track loaders at 35 percent. This machine tips at 2,700 lbs; the RT135 tips at 3,858 lbs. The tracked machine carries considerably more reserve at the same quoted rating, so do not treat the two numbers as equivalent.
Can it run a mulching head?
No. Seventeen gpm is the ceiling and there is no high-flow option for this model. Augers, brooms, grapples and light hydraulic tools are fine; anything that wants 30 gpm or more is off the list permanently, and it cannot be added later.
What will tow it?
A three-quarter-ton pickup on a standard equipment trailer handles 5,255 lbs plus trailer weight comfortably. That is the machine's main practical advantage over the tracked RT135, which weighs 6,510 lbs and pushes the same combination much closer to its limit.
Is there a two-speed option?
Not one that Gehl publishes for this model. Travel is 8 mph. That is still faster than the tracked RT135's 6 mph, so for moving around a property it is not badly placed, but there is no high range to call on for longer carries.
How much does the counterweight add?
It takes the rating from 1,350 to 1,499 lbs, a gain of 149 lbs. That is the smallest counterweight step in this part of the range - the larger R165 gains 150 lbs from a much higher base - so it recovers proportionally less of what a heavy coupler and attachment cost you. Worth having if you work near the limit, but do not expect it to change the machine's class.
