Sitting one step below the biggest radial wheeled machine Gehl sells, this one quietly makes the better case of the two. It carries the same engine and the same lift height as the R190 GEN:2 above it, gives up 250 lbs of rating, and comes back with an extra gpm of standard flow and about 830 lbs less machine to move around. Owners buying on capability rather than on the number on the side generally land here.

In use it is a straightforward hydrostatic mid-frame: 20 gpm standard, 30 gpm optional, a 119-inch hinge pin that clears a tandem's side, 62 inches of width that keeps it viable on tight residential work, and an optional two-speed that lifts travel from 8 to 12 mph. The cab is fully adjustable and the control layout can be specified three different ways. What it does not offer is self-leveling, so handling work is manual, and the radial arms trade high reach for ground-level push.

It makes most sense for a farm or a small contractor whose work is dirt, feed and material handling on ground that does not demand tracks. Gehl publishes no list price, so gather quotes under both the Gehl name and the Manitou 1650R badge. Before signing, confirm the two-speed and the counterweight are on the build, ask which control layout is fitted, and find out whether the nearest dealer is a construction house or an ag dealer - that determines how fast you get parts.

What owners like

This is the value pick inside Gehl's own range, not just against other brands. It uses the same 69.3 hp Yanmar 4TNV98C-NMS2V as the larger R190 GEN:2, shares its 119-inch hinge pin height, and actually carries a gpm more standard auxiliary flow at 20 against the R190's 19. Stepping up the range buys capacity and weight, not capability.
Twenty gpm standard with a 30 gpm high-flow option is a usable spread for a mid-frame machine - the base flow runs grapples, augers and brooms without the option, and the option is there if a planer or a snow blower joins the fleet later.
Two-speed travel takes it to 12 mph against 8 mph on the base machine, which is the single change that most affects how long a day's work takes on a property of any size.
At 62 inches wide across the machine it is narrow for its rating, which keeps it useful on residential lots and through farm gates that stop a 66-inch mid-frame.
The optional counterweight lifts the rating from 1,650 to 1,800 lbs, recovering the capacity a heavy coupler and attachment take off the nose without any other change to the machine.

What owners complain about

The 1,650 lb rating is taken at 50 percent of tipping load. Against a maker that rates at 35 percent, the same quoted number is holding back less reserve - the honest comparison figure is the 3,300 lb tipping load underneath it.
Radial lift pulls the bucket toward the machine as the arms rise, so loading over a high truck side takes more positioning than a vertical-lift machine of the same rating.
Self-leveling is not offered on this model, which means pallets, forks and bales are managed by feathering the bucket by hand for the whole lift.
Two-speed is an option, not standard, so a quote without it gets you an 8 mph machine - read the build sheet rather than assuming.
Gehl's dealer coverage is uneven and skewed toward legacy agricultural dealers rather than construction equipment houses, which is fine for parts you can plan for and awkward for the ones you cannot.

Should I buy the R165 or step up to the R190 GEN:2?

Unless you need the capacity, the R165. The two share the 69.3 hp Yanmar and a 119-inch hinge pin height, and the R165 has 20 gpm standard flow against the R190's 19. The step up buys 250 lbs of rating and around 830 lbs of machine weight. If the R165's rating covers your heaviest regular load, the extra weight is cost without benefit.

Is 1,650 lbs comparable to other brands' 1,650 lb machines?

Only if they also rate at 50 percent of tipping load. Gehl uses 50 percent for its wheeled R-series and 35 percent for its RT and VT track loaders, and other brands are split too. The tipping load - 3,300 lbs here - is the figure that compares cleanly across every maker.

Can the R165 handle pallet and bale work?

It has the capacity, particularly with the optional counterweight taking it to 1,800 lbs, but self-leveling is not offered on this model. That means the operator feathers the bucket manually to keep forks level as the arms rise. It is a skill most operators pick up quickly, but a vertical-lift machine with self-leveling is the easier tool if handling is the main job.

How narrow is it really?

Sixty-two inches across the machine, less the bucket. That is genuinely narrow for a 1,650 lb rating and is one of the quieter reasons owners pick it - it goes through gates and between structures that a 66-inch mid-frame has to work around. Bucket width will exceed that, so measure the attachment, not the chassis, for your tightest access.

What is the Manitou 1650R?

The same machine under the badge of Gehl's parent company. Two dealer networks can supply and service it, and they price independently, so it is worth quoting both. If the closer dealer sells Manitou, that is a real argument for buying the Manitou-badged one.

Does it need diesel exhaust fluid?

The 69.3 hp Yanmar in this machine is naturally aspirated at this power level and the range is certified to Tier 4 Final. Gehl's literature does not list a DEF requirement for it. Confirm the aftertreatment arrangement on the specific build with the dealer, since emissions hardware changes with model year more often than buyers expect.
