The bright segment is what Gehl V230 is rated to carry; the grey run past it is the rest of its tipping load. Bar length is tipping load drawn to the same scale on every machine on the site, so a short bar is a smaller machine and not a conservative rating.

Gehl publishes no list price for this machine, and we found no dealer listing worth quoting, so there is no number here to give you. What we can say is what the machines around it cost: the middle half of the 9 wheeled machines within 15 per cent of its capacity list between $53,934 and $62,900. That is a fact about them, not a quote for this one.

Mid-range vertical-lift wheeled loader from the CONEXPO 2023 V-series program, sitting between the V210 and V275. The 2,300 lb capacity and 122-inch lift put it squarely in pallet-and-truck-loading territory rather than the dirt work the radial R-series is built for.

What owners report

Summarised from the sources listed below. Nothing here was tested by us.

Between the 2,100 lb and 2,750 lb machines in Gehl's mid-range sits this one, and its case rests on reach and speed rather than raw capacity. A 122-inch hinge pin with 91 inches of dump height is genuine truck-loading geometry for the class, and the 12 mph two-speed option is the fastest anything in the mid-range manages.

Mechanically it is the same turbocharged 72 hp Yanmar used through most of this range, making 217 ft-lbs at 1,800 rpm, with 23 GPM of standard auxiliary flow at 3,475 psi and a 30 GPM high-flow option at 3,325 psi. The platform changes that arrived with this generation are the interesting part: the lift arm slopes away from the operator so material falls off rather than accumulating, hydraulic lines run inside the arms where they are protected, the cab is roughly 23% larger with a new window and roof design that slopes forward for visibility to the load, and the pilot joysticks are mounted to the seat so they move with the operator. Keyless start and LED lighting come with the package, and the IdealAccess bi-folding door - more headroom, and the option of working with the door open - is available as an upgrade. Gehl puts the total cost of ownership improvement across the mid-range at up to 15% over five years.

Loading trucks and handling pallets on wheels, with the reach but without a large-frame machine and its transport bill, is the owner's case here. Gehl publishes no price, so quotes are the only benchmark, and since it also sells as the Manitou 2300V it is worth pricing under both badges. Before signing, confirm two-speed and high flow are itemised rather than assumed, and if you are coming from a radial machine, run it on a grading job first - the change in how it backdrags surprises people.

What owners like

  • Vertical lift with a 122-inch hinge pin and 91 inches of dump height clears standard truck bodies without repositioning, which is not a given at 2,300 lbs of capacity.
  • 23 GPM standard at 3,475 psi with a 30 GPM high-flow option covers most attachment catalogues without stepping up a frame size and paying the transport penalty that comes with it.
  • Two-speed takes travel from 8 mph to 12 mph, the quickest in Gehl's mid-range, which matters on sites where the stockpile is a few hundred yards from the work.
  • The turbocharged Yanmar 4TNV98CT-XNGL delivers 217 ft-lbs at 1,800 rpm, so it works from low revs rather than needing to be wound out.
  • It shares the mid-range redesign: a lift arm that sheds material rather than collecting it, hydraulic lines routed inside the arms, a cab about 23% larger with reworked glass and roof, and seat-mounted pilot joysticks that move with the operator.

What owners complain about

  • Tipping load is 4,600 lbs against a 2,300 lb rating, and because Gehl quotes wheeled machines at 50% there is no hidden margin in that number.
  • At 7,749 lbs it needs a proper equipment trailer and a three-quarter-ton truck as a minimum, so it is not the casual-transport machine its capacity might suggest.
  • Vertical geometry backdrags and scrapes less willingly than radial, which anyone moving across from Gehl's R-series will feel on the first grading job.
  • The IdealAccess bi-folding door is an optional upgrade rather than standard equipment on this range.
  • Gehl publishes no list price and the mid-range V-series is recent enough that used comparables are scarce, so both quotes and resale are hard to benchmark.

What buyers ask

How does the V230's rating compare with other brands?
Gehl quotes wheeled skid steers at 50% of tipping load, so 2,300 lbs comes off a 4,600 lb tipping load. That is the same basis Case and New Holland use on their wheeled machines, so those numbers are directly comparable - but a track loader quoting 2,300 lbs at 35% is a considerably larger machine.
Is two-speed worth the option cost?
It takes travel from 8 mph to 12 mph, the fastest in Gehl's mid-range. If you work on one confined site it will not pay for itself. If you carry material across a yard repeatedly, it changes how many loads fit into a shift. It is an option rather than standard, so check the build sheet.
V230 or V275?
The V275 brings 450 lbs more capacity, more reach at about 98 inches of dump height, more flow at 26 GPM standard, and about 450 lbs more machine to haul. The V230 is quicker at 12 mph against 11 mph and cheaper to transport. If you are not regularly at the capacity limit, the V230 is the more sensible buy.
Will I miss radial lift?
If you backdrag and scrape a lot, yes - vertical geometry keeps the load closer through the arc, which is what makes it good at truck loading, but it is less willing at ground level than a radial machine. Buyers coming off Gehl's R-series consistently find this the adjustment. Try it on a grading job before you commit.
Is the IdealAccess door standard equipment?
No, it is an optional upgrade on this range. It is a bi-folding design that stores in front of the operator, giving more headroom than a conventional swing-out door and allowing the machine to be operated with the door open or closed. Worth pricing if your operators run with the door open in warm weather.
